Fuerteventura Freestyle Worldcup 2010 personal report by Rossi
Few days ago, the Fuerteventura Freestyle Worldcup 2010 took place at the beaches of Sotavento. All the big names were here – in total 44 competitors – up to go for 2 double eliminations.
Already at the arrival, I heard that there are some crazy new trick combinations out and that the guys are ripping! I arrived pretty late, but still had some time to get used to the conditions – it was pretty flat in the beginning and very strong winds throughout the competition.
My first opponent was my good friend Mattia Pedrani from Italy – as I wrote in the previous news post, I had a really good heat and the wind might have been a bit light for Mattia – I could pull off most of my best moves like a planning Double Eslider, a Burner and a Gozzada 900. That was enough to win against the Italian and set me to the next round against Gollito Estredo. My moves weren’t all there this time, but I’ve heard it was close until he pulled off some crazy Spock into Culo combination in the last 2 minutes of the heat…
Next day, in the Double Elimination I lost against Max Rowe from the UK, he was on a way bigger sail than me – pulled off some great moves – I fell too often and was missing one move on the inside, didn’t have enough points to win this heat.
We saw a great final of the first Double Elimination with Kiri Thode winning his first Elimination against Gollito Estredo – amazing moves – high Skopus and Kiri had super aggressive Spock into Culo combos…
Next single I could beat young gun Daniel Hasulyo from Hungary and lost against Quincy Offringa right after, which set me against Bjorn Saragoza in the Double Elimination on the next day.
I was against Bjorn some time ago already and he’s one of the best freestylers around, he has all the moves his training partners Tonky, Taty and Kiri are doing. However, I had another awesome run with a lot of double combos, Burner and a Shaka Diablo in the last 10 seconds – the decision was very close, it took long until the judges had a result and finally they announced I won against Bjorn!
Next up was the same opponent I lost in Podersdorf to, Dieter van der Eyken – a very young sailor from Belgium – this time the luck was not with me, crashed too many times and lost.
However, great competition, great organization, good winds and lot of people watching how spectacular windsurfing can be!
I am for now still here in Fuerte, trained a bit on new moves – We’ll leave here on the 10th and try to be in Sweden / Motala for a Surffestival and a first Trickademy “learnival” next weekend… see you there!
Good winds
Rossi
