PWA Lanzarote - The worst travel ever!

Me and Tine supposed to fly to Lanzarote on 30th of June. The plan was to arrive in the afternoon at 5. It was close for the competition which was starting on 1st of July. Everything should be fine - arrive at 5, get transfered to the hotel, maybe rig and sail a bit, have a nice sleep and start the competition on the next day.

Of course we haven't calculated with "Murphy's law".

First there was a traffic jam on the highway from Salzburg to Munich, where Tine was stuck and therefore he arrived a bit late for the checkin. Ok - so far so good - checkin-time - we had 6 bags of windsurfing equipment (as Tine had to bring F2 boards to the Canaries for some teamriders) - all the bags to the Condor counter. Checkin and we had to carry all the bags to the bulky luggage counter - who sent us one floor higher to another bulky luggage counter. So we carried everything one level up.
Well at the checkin the lady told us that boarding starts in 10 minutes, so we did not have any time to park our cars in the parkinghouse. Fortunately the guy from Kranzeder parking just took our keys and drove our cars to his parking place for the week. So we could go through the security controls and go on board of our plane. One more thing - fuck, the windsurfing equipment, they just drove away some of our bags and told us they don't fit in the plane...they will come one day later...
So far so bad - we were sitting in the plane, rolling around on the airport - but didn't take off - some technical problem, so some technicans checked the computers - after 2 hours of sitting there, the captain told us - "sorry, but the flight is cancelled..".
Almost going crazy already, we went back to a transit gate - after another 2 hours of waiting, they told us that the plane will go next day 6am!!
So what shall we do now - 6am, the flight time is 4hours 10 minutes, there is -1hour time difference, we would need half an hour to get the luggage and another 20 minutes for the transfer. Thanks to Remko who was already at the Event we heard that skippersmeeting should be at 10 and first possible start at 10:30. Well we could just make it or just miss it...
We decided to go for it - Tine: "... if you go for a mission, you have to finish it...". Checked our 8 bags back in already, went to a hotel that we got for the night. The transfer back to the airport was at 4am and at 4:30 there was a 200m long queue in front of the counter.
And of course, at 6, when we were supposed to take off, the plane wasn't even half full. So we waited another half an hour in the plane until all passengers were there and another half an hour somewhere on the airfield as we were not in the schedule and had to wait until we got a permission to start.
So far so bad - arriving at 10:15 in Lanzarote (remember: skippersmeeting at 10, first possible start at 10:30) we received our equiment (the only positive aspect of the flight) and hurried to the event-area.
Arriving there, went out of the car - "Rossi you just missed your heat.... TEEEEEEEE ...". The horn for Tine's heat was just resonating and the red flag (3 minutes to start) went up.
Tine made the best out of it and took his harness and Remko's gear, unfortunately he wasn't able to beat Nico Akgazcyan, but lets say after that journey we didn't care anymore...

The story for one of the worst trips to a windsurfing competiton we had till now...

EFPT Alacati - No wind

After arrival and a nice welcome, as well as some nice dinners and parties, we're now waiting for wind again.
My time in the competition was pretty short - although, the conditions here would be pretty good for me, light wind on the inside and flat water. It is gusty as there's a little port/wall few hundered meters upwind. Unfortunately i was not that lucky with my opponent in the single elimination - i got Bjorn Saragozza - a 15 year old Bonaire kid - sailing on 4,7 when we are hardly planing and bumping on our 5,8's. After the first time our heat was cancelled due to lack of wind, we could finally do it and i had a pretty good heat, as the wind kicked in a bit more at the end of the 5 minutes. I had moves like Grubby, Spock, Eslider, Shaka, Flaka720, Funnell, Puneta and a Ponch - unfortunately i crashed in one shaka attempt and a Lollypop in the last seconds - which was most probably the moves which made me loose. Anyway, Bjorn is a very good sailor already and he might be one of the future talents inventing new moves....

One variation i've seen him doing here was for example: full speed, step around the sail like a Backwind Jibe, step back into the straps on the switch side (Funnell-position) and end it like any Puneta/CF-Puneta or Funnell.

At half past four today (Sunday) the wind turned to normal direction and some whitecaps were visible. Some riders already started to prepare their sails...
Unfortunately it was not picking up enough to do any more heats. For that reason the competition was officially finished today at 5pm without a result. We had a closing ceremony at 6 and a sponsored barbeque in Surf Paradise Garden after that.

Well, i packed my stuff already and we're ready to leave with the transfer at 7am tomorrow morning.

Greets from Turkey!

The journey to Alacati

Yesterday, Monday June 18th 2007 we had a nice journey with the whole EFPT - so called family - from Rhodos to the next event site in Alacati/Turkey.
It all started on Sunday evening, as we had to load a Truck which brought our equipment to the port in Rhodos. All riders paid to have Sumsi - Michael Sumereder - looking for our equipment for the whole night.
Next morning 7am we arrived with a taxi, loaded all our Equipment onto the ferry's front and at 8 the trip started with departure to Marmaris in Turkey. We arrived around 1,5 hours later and first had to unload our stuff again...after some formalities with visas and stuff, we ended up at the exit of the ferry-port, where a little truck was waiting already. Check the pix below, we used a special technique, developed mainly by Andre Paskowski during the trip last year, to fit all the equipment onto the Truck.
Half an hour later, our nice bus arrived. Fully equiped with aircondition, we were heading for Alacati. Short stop in Marmaris - and what else do 20 hungry windsurfers do first in Turkey - exactly!! - they split up and run half to BurgerKing and half to McDonalds!
The journey to Alacati (near Cesme) took around 7 hours, but was pretty relaxed and we had a few breaks.
Finally there, the nice little pensions Shaka and Herman welcome us. One more time stressy - unloading the truck - and at 8 free pasta at Shaka.. so far so good...hope it goes on like this,...stay tuned....

4th place in EFPT Event Rhodos

With a bit of luck and some good heats, i could make a great 3rd place in the single ellimination. On my way up i first met a greek local, T. Promponas, after that i met one more time my good friend Jakub Kosmowski from Poland. With a bit luck for the wind (I had to use my 5,8 and i am lighter than Jakub), i could beat him and advanced one more round. Now i was up to have another tough heat against the winner of Podersdorf, Nicolas Akgaczyan from France, i had my best heat of the whole competition against him. In the 5 minutes i was just falling once at the end, the rest was very good and contained for example shaka diablo, double flaka and puneta900. This was my fight up into the Finals, where Andre Paskowski was my first opponent in the fight for loosers or winnersfinal. The European Champion 2006 beat me - as Kevin Mevissen beat Andreas Olandersson - and so it was clear the fight was Andre Paskowski and Kevin about place 1 and 2, and me and Andreas for place 3 and 4. That was a very tough heat again, I was on my 5,2 and 94 liter board. In the last seconds i saw Andy going for a ponch, and he missed it, so i tried as well and pulled it, guess that was the move which let me be on the great 3rd place in the single elimination!! Well - as the wind stayed, we just started over with the double elimination (where all the loosers go against each other and everybody has the chance to fight himself up some places) after a 45 minutes break. Obviously there was one of the top guys fighting his way up throughout the whole ladder - Normen Günzlein. He was doing 9 Heats this day, with 7 in a row and fought himself up to the 2nd place. I was one of his opponents and with a double spock in the heat (which not many riders are doing in a heat yet!), he didn't leave me a lot chance...So Normen kicked me down to the 4th place, which is a great result and adds a good amount of points to my overall ranking in the EFPT (www.efpt.net)

 Result EFPT Rhodos:
1. Andre Paskowski - GER
2. Normen Günzlein - GER
3. Kevin Mevissen - NL
4. Michael Roßmeier - AUT
5. Andreas Olandersson - SWE

In Rhodos already

We arrived last Thursday here in Trianda in Rhodos/Greece.
The first day (Friday) was pretty windy already - in the afternoon on 4,7 and quite some waves. Kevin Mevissen did some backloops! Tine Slabe and Fabian Weber were also here already and we had some nice sessions. No wind during the weekend - and today there was something again - some pix from Fabi and me from the session today below.

Well - Trianda is a nice place, there are bars and restaurants all around the village. We stay in a nice appartement pretty near the beach. The surfcenter at Forum Beach Hotel isn't ready yet as they just moved there from another place, but like this we, the riders for the EFPT Event which is starting in a few days already, have the whole center for ourselves and some locals.
The wind usually kicks in by miday and picks up around 3pm. Today unfortunately it dropped again after around half an hour and the current was very strong (was difficult to stay upwind). Most of the guys were on sails around 5.0 and 100 liter boards - however, 5.8 probably would had been a better choice...

One of the guys which is renting umbrellas on the beach around 100 meters downwind was going crazy and started throwing stones on Fabi - luckily he didn't hit him...

We hope for the next days to get some wind and serious action!
keep you updated
